Na'imah allowed temporary passport release for UK and Japan travel

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Daim Zainuddin's wife, Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid, has been granted temporary release of her passport to travel to the United Kingdom and Japan.

Sessions Court judge Azura Alwi allowed Na'imah's application, made through her lawyer Nizamuddin Abdul Hamid, to fly overseas for work and to meet her lawyers.

Nizamuddin requested the court's permission to hold the passport from today until Nov 11.

Azura approved the application and ordered that the passport be returned to the court on Nov 11.

Deputy public prosecutor Maziah Mohaide said the prosecution had no objections to Na'imah's request.

In August, Na'imah obtained temporary release of her passport to travel to China for work from Aug 28 to Sept 9.

Previously, she was also granted her passport to attend an art exhibition in Venice and meet her lawyer in London in July. In June, she travelled to Switzerland for the Basel Art Exhibition.

On March 22, High Court judge Datuk Ahmad Bache dismissed her application to permanently regain her passport.

Na'imah had surrendered her passport at the Sessions Court as part of her bail conditions after being charged with failing to declare her assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

According to the charge sheet, Na'imah failed to comply with an MACC notice to declare assets, including:

Companies: Ilham Tower Sdn Bhd and Ilham Baru Sdn Bhd

Luxury vehicles: Mercedes Benz EQC400 and Mercedes Benz 500SL

Properties: Menara Ilham, a residence in Bukit Tunku, four pieces of freehold land and buildings near Bukit Tunku, as well as freehold land and a building near Jalan Anthinahapan and Cantoment Road in Penang.

The offence falls under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act, which carries a maximum of five years' imprisonment and a RM100,000 fine upon conviction.

She was released on RM250,000 bail with one surety.
