GEORGE TOWN: An electrical machinery caretaker has been remanded by the magistrate's court here today for allegedly demanding a RM30,000 bribe in exchange for a civil repair service work contract at his workplace.
Magistrate Mohamad Azlan Basri allowed the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) application for a six-day remand order against the man in his 30s.
Sources said the suspect, who acted as the project authority in the institute where he was working, had requested the bribe from a company manager, who was awarded the contract to repair the building.
"The suspect had asked the company manager to provide him RM30,000 during a phone conversation.
"This was in exchange for securing the one-off civil repair service work worth nearly half a million," the source said.
The source said the suspect was subsequently arrested in an operation conducted by the state MACC around Penaga last night.
"Following the arrest, the MACC also seized a Ford Mustang GT Auto worth approximately RM200,000, a BMW R1200 GS Adventure motorcycle valued at RM72,000, a Kawasaki 1400 GTR motorcycle estimated at RM40,000 and jewellery valued about RM7,000.
"Investigations revealed that all the vehicles and jewellery were likely purchased using bribe money received from contractors involved in projects at the institute," he added.
Meanwhile, state MACC director Datuk Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah confirmed the arrest of the suspect.
The case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009.
