Police corporal remanded over RM80k bribe [WATCH]

GEORGE TOWN: A police corporal has been remanded for five days for investigation after being suspected of soliciting an RM80,000 bribe to assist in securing the release of a woman's husband, who was detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

Magistrate Azlan Basri issued the remand order, which will last from today until Dec 23.

The suspect, in his 40s, arrived at the court handcuffed and wearing a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) lock-up shirt at 8.40am.

He left the court about an hour later.

Yesterday, the MACC detained the police corporal for allegedly demanding an RM80,000 bribe from a woman in exchange for helping secure her husband's release from Sosma custody.

According to sources, the suspect contacted the woman on Nov 30 after her husband's arrest.

During a phone call, he requested RM80,000 to alter statements that would help facilitate her husband's release. He also asked for an advance payment of RM25,000, to which the woman transferred RM3,000 via e-wallet.

On Monday, the suspect contacted her again, demanding an additional RM2,000 in cash.

The woman handed over RM1,000 during a meeting at a petrol station in Sungai Dua at 2pm, yesterday, leading to his arrest.

The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
