Ex-Court of Appeal judge admitted to Bar

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Yaacob Sam was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya today.

Yaacob, 66, who retired on March 12 this year, was called to the bar before High Court judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid. In congratulating Yaacob, Justice Ahmad Kamal praised his extensive knowledge of legal matters, noting that Yaacob had previously been his superior at the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC).

During today's "long call" ceremony, lawyer Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden assisted Yaacob in donning the robe. His admission to the Bar was proposed by lawyer M. Athimulan.

In his speech, Athimulan highlighted Yaacob's contributions, stating that he had written over 900 judgments and authored 299 grounds of judgment on various legal issues during his time as a High Court and Court of Appeal judge.

Yaacob was appointed as a Judicial Commissioner in January 2009 and became a High Court Judge in Penang in August 2010. He was later transferred to Shah Alam in 2012 and served as chairman of the Enforcement Agencies Integrity Commission (EAIC) for three years, beginning on October 15, 2014.

The Head of the Legal Division of the AGC, Donald Franklin, representing the Attorney-General, and lawyer Nik Nurul Atiqah Nik Yusof, appearing for the Malaysian Bar, raised no objections to Yaacob's admission. – BERNAMA
