SHAH ALAM: A total of 1,091 foreigners were screened with more than 600 detained in a joint operation by the Selangor National Security Council here today (MKN).
The two-hour raid targeted shophouses and business premises at Section 25 in Taman Sri Muda here.
It involved 455 officers from various agencies, including the Immigration Department, MKN, General Operations Force, state police, National Registration Department, Malaysian Civil Defence Force and the Shah Alam city council.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the raid was conducted based on intelligence and findings regarding the influx and presence of foreigners in the locality.
"Out of the 1,091 people screened in this operation, 602 have been detained on suspicion of offences, including violations of the Immigration Act, particularly overstaying or failing to present valid travel documents such as work permits or passports.
"The detainees are from nine countries, primarily from Africa and Southeast Asia with Bangladesh having the highest number. They are aged between 19 and 53 years, consisting of 505 males and 97 females," he said in a press conference following the raid.
Present were Selangor deputy police chief Datuk S. Sasikala Devi and Selangor Immigration Department director Khairrul Aminus Kamaruddin.
Amirudin said the detainees would be taken to the Semenyih Immigration Depot for further action.
He said they would be investigated under the Immigration Act 1958/63, Passport Act 1966, Immigration Regulations 1963 and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.
The detainees were from Algeria, the Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
