Lorry driver fined RM100 for hurling insulting words at cop

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A lorry driver was fined RM100, in default of three months' jail, by the magistrate's court here today for hurling insulting words at a policeman last Sunday.

Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan handed down the sentence after S. Hari Ram, 37, pleaded guilty to the offence when the charge was read to him by the court interpreter.

Hari Ram admitted to hurling insulting words at a policeman by the side of the road near the TNB housing area in Jalan Baru, Prai, at around 4.20pm on Oct 6.

He was charged under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, which provides for a fine of RM100.

Deputy public prosecutor Anis Suhada Rosli prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.

According to the facts of the case, the policeman had ordered the accused to stop after seeing him run a red light.

Hari Ram, however, acted aggressively and hurled insults after the policeman issued him a summons.

The incident occurred days after a motorcyclist, who was caught on video verbally abusing a traffic policeman for issuing him a summons, was charged at the magistrate's court in George Town last Friday. Unemployed Goh Weng Keong, 25, claimed trial to the offence.

Goh was accused of humiliating Corporal Nik Muhammad Faizal Nik Long by verbally abusing him in front of a bus stop at Jalan Thean Teik, Air Itam, at around 6.45pm last Wednesday.

He was charged under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment and a fine upon conviction.
