KUALA LUMPUR: A politician is said to have stored more than S$1.5m to be used for bribes at a condominium unit here, said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The graft-busters made the discovery during a search of the property on Saturday following an investigation into a multi-million ringgit corruption scandal involving the Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI).
The probe is related to sand mining concessions carried out by the state's investment arm company.
It was learnt that the politician, said to be influential, used the condominium unit to store the cash, which would be used for bribes and money politics.
A total of S$1,529,000 was found at the condominium unit.
A source said a suspect was arrested and during investigations, led MACC to the condominium unit.
Investigations revealed the condominium was rented by a businessman.
"The money is believed to have been given by an unknown individual and was kept by the businessman on the orders of the politician.
"The money has been seized as part of the investigations," the source added.
The company involved applied for a concession from MBI more than five years ago and elements of corruption were said to have happened, added the source.
It was learnt that MACC had frozen at least 15 accounts owned by individuals and companies that investigators believe were used to pay bribes.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, when contacted, confirmed the raid, adding that S$1.53 million was seized.
"I can confirm the two arrests. The first one is a former senior MBI executive, while the other is a businessman who has connections to an influential person in Selangor."
