5 detained for ganja trafficking

GEORGE TOWN: Police busted a ganja trafficking syndicate with the arrests of five people, including three woman, here.

In a series of raids between Tuesday and yesterday, police also seized 26,233gm of ganja worth RM115,000.00.

State police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department had launched raids.

"Two men and three women, aged between 24 and 36, were nabbed at a parking lot here. They are believed to be involved in ganja trafficking.

"From them, we seized ganja weighing 20,132gm and worth RM65,960.

"In a follow-up action, police raided a house in Air Itam.

"They found three packets, believed to contain ganja dried leaves, weighing 1,501gm and worth RM8,640.

"They also found nine packets, believed to contain compressed ganja dried leaves, weighing 4,600gm and worth RM30,400.

"The syndicate has been active since the middle of this year and the drugs are for the domestic market," he said in a Facebook post.

Three of those detained tested positive for drugs. Two have a record.

The five have been remanded into custody for seven days.

During the raids, police also seized a car and a motorcycle.
