Penang police detain duo involved in ganja distribution

SEBERANG JAYA: Police here have detained two men suspected to be involved in ganja distribution activities.

State police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said police also seized 20 transparent plastic bags containing compressed blocks of dried leaves believed to be ganja, worth about RM74,930 following the duo's arrest.

He said the suspects - aged 22 and 33, had been operating since October last year, targeting markets in Penang, Kedah and Kuala Lumpur.

"The drugs seized could potentially serve 50,000 users or be used 50,000 times," he said, adding the suspects had also tested positive for methamphetamine.

Hamzah said one of the suspect has a previous criminal record related to drug related offence.

Both suspects had been remanded for seven days and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

If convicted, the offenders face the death penalty or life imprisonment and at least 12 strokes of the rotan.
