TUMPAT: A 33-year-old man failed in his attempt to smuggle 7,000 kg of "bundle" clothes into the country after he was stopped by General Operations Force personnel yesterday (Oct 18).
The man, who was driving a lorry, was passing by Pos Nibong at 11.30am when he was stopped.
"After checking the lorry, around 7,000kg of bundle clothes were found," General Operations Force Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said in a statement.
Nik Ros said the driver did not possess any documents for the goods.
The man was arrested, while the clothes, worth an estimated RM350,000 along with the lorry, were seized.
Nik Ros said the man is believed to have been hired by to deliver the goods to local buyers.
The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act for smuggling with intent to avoid duties.
In a separate case, Nik Ros said GOF personnel seized about 200 boxes of smuggled contact lenses worth more than RM10,000 in Pasir Mas yesterday.
However, he said no one was arrested in the 2pm operation at an illegal jetty in Jeram Perdah 2.
"We suspect smugglers brought in the contact lenses from Thailand via the illegal jetty but abandoned the goods."
