BATU PAHAT: A bus driver was sentenced to two years in prison today for breaching a prevention order under the Prevention of Crime Act 1959 (Poca).
Yuvarajan Muniady, 34, received the sentence after pleading guilty before magistrate Suhaila Shafi'uddin when the charge was read to him.
According to the charge, he had violated the restriction order by leaving Mukim Sri Gading (a monitored area) without written permission from the Johor police chief at 3.30pm on Oct 15.
He was charged under Section 15 (4) of Poca 1959.
According to the case facts, police detained the accused, who was also under supervision, after being involved in a separate case for stealing instant noodles at a supermarket in the city.
The investigation showed that the accused, a father of one, was under a Poca order when he left the area without permission.
The accused was detained and taken to the district police headquarters.
The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor, Farah Wahidah Mohd Sharip, while the accused was represented by Avery Tan Zi Mei from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
Earlier, the accused, along with another detainee, 41, was also remanded into custody for a week starting today for smuggling 70.75gm of heroin into the district police headquarters lock-up.
The remand order was issued by magistrate Nurasidah A. Rahman.
