KUALA LUMPUR: An unemployed man who allegedly robbed two women, one of whom a senior citizen, just 45 minutes apart two weeks ago, was charged in the Sessions Court here today (Oct 24).
Thanabalan Moses, 38, claimed trial to robbing a 78-year-old woman by snatching her handbag and deliberately causing hurt to her at 7.30am at the roadside of Jalan Limau Manis, Bangsar on Oct 7.
The victim was on her way to buy newspapers when her bag was snatched.
She was treated at the University Malaya Medical Centre for head injuries.
In another court, Thanabalan claimed trial to robbing a 20-year-old woman of her iPad, MyKad, cash and other belongings worth a total of RM3,000, at 6.15am near a petrol station in Brickfields on the same day.
He entered his plea before judges Egusra Ali and Norina Zainol Abidin.
The charges under Sections 394 and 392 of the Penal Code carry a jail term of between 14 and 20 years, fine and whipping, upon conviction.
Before Norina and judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin, Thanabalan further pleaded not guilty to robbing two women, including a Korean, earlier this year.
He had allegedly robbed the foreigner of RM885 cash at 6.50am on March 18 along Jalan Ang Seng in Brickfields here, while the other woman was robbed of her belongings worth RM3,500 at 7.40am on Feb 12 at the same place.
Deputy public prosecutors Nadia Eleena Jamaluddin Akbal, Joshua Tee Yee Khuan and Nidzuwan Abd Latip did not offer bail as the offences were non-bailable.
Nadia and Tee said Thanabalan, if granted bail, could commit a crime yet again, was a threat to society and was capable of absconding.
Thanabalan, who was unrepresented, was denied bail.
On Oct 11, Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said a suspect, who was arrested in Ampang, had not only robbed a senior citizen but also another woman in Brickfields.
A video showing an elderly woman in a pink T-shirt being robbed by a motorcyclist, causing her to fall on her road, had gone viral.
