JOHOR BARU: A man who reprimanded another for smoking in a restaurant has filed a police report after the smoker challenged him to a fight.
Johor Baru Utara police chief Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh said the man, 47, lodged a report on the incident yesterday.
A video of the incident, which took place at a restaurant in Taman Perling, has gone viral.
"No threats were made and the fight didn't happen," Balveer said in a statement.
He advised members of the public to abide by the law, including rules related to smoking in public areas.
"Those with information on the case are advised to contact the Johor Baru Utara police headquarters at 07-5563122."
In the first four months of this year alone, 16,705 people were fined for smoking in dining areas.
Under the law, violators face fines of up to RM10,000 or up to two years in jail. Restaurant owners risk a RM5,000 fine or up to a year in jail.
