GEORGE TOWN: Police have initiated a probe into a violent attack on a 37-year-old lawyer here on Tuesday.
The 9.50am incident happened in broad daylight, in front of the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf outlet at Persiaran Karpal Singh 2 here.
Northeast district acting police chief Superintendent Lee Swee Sake said no arrest has been made so far.
"The suspects are two men, armed with metal rod. They came in a car, which we believed had a fake registration plate. We have reasons to believe that the suspects could have been hired. The mastermind is someone else.
"We are investigating the cause of the attack from all angles. But, this is not a robbery case," he said today.
Lee urged those who witnessed the incident to come forward to assist in investigation.
He assured that the identity of the whistleblower would be protected.
The case is probed under Section 324 of the Penal Code.
Section 324 is for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means.
Earlier today, the Malaysian Bar expressed condemnation following a violent assault on a Penang lawyer and called for swift action from the authorities.
