KOTA BARU: A Thai man who was on his way to deliver five kg of compressed cannabis valued at more than RM16,000 to his buyers, was arrested by the General Operations Force (GOF) here yesterday (Oct 27).
GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the 67-year-old foreigner was travelling in a van when arrested in Salor.
"Acting on tip-offs, the GOF personnel stopped the vehicle when it passed the Salor area about 1.40pm.
"After checking the van, they found five kg of compressed cannabis inside it and later detained the suspect," he said in a statement.
He added that they also seized the van valued at about RM110,000, two handphones worth RM3,500 and a border pass.
"Initial investigations showed that the cannabis was meant for local distribution. The suspect is being held for further action," he added.
On another note, he said a man was arrested for trying to smuggle 35 litres of petrol to Thailand in Tumpat yesterday.
He said the 25-year-old suspect was detained at Kampung Tualang at 11.20am.
"Also seized was a car which has been modified for smuggling purposes," he added.
He said the man is believed to be one of the fuel smugglers who has been active in smuggling along the Kelantan/Thai border.
