Marine police seize RM116,940 worth of smuggled cigarettes in raid along Sandakan River

SANDAKAN: Marine police seized untaxed cigarettes of various brands valued at RM116,940 in a raid along a river in Pulau Bai yesterday.

A suspicious-looking fibre boat was spotted in the river area was spotted at the area 3.03pm.

Sandakan Marine police operations headquarters commander Deputy Superintendent Ezuandi Bahadin said they had received a tip-off from a local over the boat.

"Upon inspection, we found various brands of cigarettes onboard.

"All the cigarettes are believed to be untaxed and suspected to have been smuggled in from the Philippines," he said in a statement today.

The total value of the seized cigarettes is estimated at RM116,940.

"All confiscated items have been transported to the Sandakan Marine police operations headquarters for further action.

"The case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967," he added.
