Police arrest teen after newborn found in Johor shopping complex toilet

JOHOR BARU: A female teenager has been arrested by the police to assist in investigations into the discovery of an abandoned baby boy in the toilet of a shopping complex here on Thursday.

Johor Baru (North) district police chief Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh said the 19-year-old was arrested at 8.45pm in Tampoi, just a few hours after the newborn was found.

Balveer said the case came to light when the police were alerted by a cleaner who discovered the baby in the toilet of the premises.

"The cleaner found the baby boy with his umbilical cord still attached and his body covered in blood.

"The baby was sent to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital for checks and treatment.

"His condition is reported stable," Balveer said in a statement today.

He added that the police are looking for a local man to facilitate its investigation into the case.

The case, he said, is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for concealing birth with the intention of abandoning the baby.
