Cops record statement from UPNM bullying suspect

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have recorded the statement of the suspect in the alleged bullying of a second-year Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) graduate.

City police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said police recorded the suspect's statement this morning, while a witness to the incident will have his statement recorded later today.

The witness is the suspect's roommate.

The suspect, a senior cadet who allegedly pressed a hot iron against the victim, was not detained.

Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed police were probing the incident under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons.

The incident allegedly happened on the night of Oct 22 at the UPNM dormitory.

Two institutions are responsible for the cades at UPNM which comes under the Defence Ministry's purview.

The university itself is responsible for the students between 8am to 5pm, while the Military Training Academy is responsible for the students for the rest of the day.

The Malaysian Armed Forces is also investigating the case.

This is the second case involving the same method of abuse at UPNM in seven years.

In 2017, UPNM cadet officer Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain died after being bullied, beaten, and tortured, with most of his body repeatedly burned by a steam iron.

Six former UPNM students were sentenced to death by hanging by the Court of Appeal for Zulfarhan's murder.
