KOTA BARU: Malaysian police are investigating if the six people arrested by Thai authorities for possessing 6,000 Yaba pills on Friday are members of a drug smuggling syndicate.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Khaw Kok Chin said investigations are being carried out with the assistance of their Thai counterparts.
He also said that police have yet to determine whether the 6,000 pills seized by the Thai police were intended for Malaysia's black market or otherwise.
"I was informed that the investigation on the case is still on-going by the Thai police and they will soon obtain a remand order against those arrested," he told the New Straits Times.
Khaw added that the police would beef up enforcement and security at the Malaysia-Thailand border to prevent illegal drug trafficking in the area.
He added that checks would be carried out by officers from the Kelantan Narcotic Criminal Investigation Department, the General Operations Force, and the state Secretariat Nucleus Narcotic.
On Oct 15, Khaw had said that police have detected 172 illegal bases related to drug smuggling along Sungai Golok on the Malaysia-Thailand border in Kelantan.
He had said the illegal bases were spread out across four districts - Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah and Jeli.
It was reported yesterday that a popular modern dikir barat singer were among six Malaysians arrested in south Thailand for possession of 6,000 pills in Sungai Golok town on Friday
The six were detained at a hotel around 6am. They were believed to have crossed the border town for leisure over the Deepavali holidays.
