[UPDATED] MACC charges one of its own for misusing RM613k in seized assets

KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission assistant commissioner was charged at the Sessions Court in Shah Alam today with misappropriating more than RM613,000 worth of seized assets.

Azizun Mohamad, 44, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him by the court interpreter before Judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud.

According to the charge sheet, Azizun was accused of misappropriating the assets related to Op Green, an operation conducted by the MACC that uncovered a diesel vehicle registration fraud in the mySikap system in 2019.

He was charged with committing the offence in Cyberjaya between June 1, 2020 and February this year.

The charge was framed under Section 403 of the Penal Code for criminal misappropriation of property.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd 'Afif Ali prosecuted while the accused was represented by Mohd Nazri Yahya.

Awang Kerisnada later fixed bail at RM30,000 in one surety.

He also ordered the accused to report to the MACC headquarters during the first week of each month and to surrender his international passport to the court.

Additional conditions set by the court included prohibiting the accused from contacting any witnesses related to the case and barring him from accessing any computers linked to the database at the Kedah MACC office.

Awang Kerisnada also set Dec 9 as mention.

Meanwhile, MACC, in a statement, said the action against the accused reflected the commission's commitment to upholding justice and combating corruption and abuse of power without fear or favour.

"MACC takes the issues of integrity and work ethics among its officers seriously and without compromise.

"It must be emphasised that MACC will not hesitate to take strict action against any officer who violates rules and laws in order to uphold the trust and responsibility vested in the commission."
