CCTV footage of senior cop crashing into teen played in court

IPOH: The closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage showing Deputy Superintendent Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak crashing his vehicle into a teen was replayed at the High Court here today.

The third prosecution witness, Assistant Superintendent Nur Fairuz Idris, an audio-video investigation analyst from the Police Forensic Laboratory in Cheras, Selangor, testified that the footage and images taken from the video appeared blurry and unclear.

"In my analysis, I noted that the position of the CCTV camera relative to the vehicle contributed to the quality issues, as the distance from the target affected image clarity.

"During my analysis, some images were captured from afar, leading to blurriness and a lack of detail," she said before High Court judge Datuk Bhupindar Singh Gurcharan Singh Preet.

Lead counsel M. Athimulan questioned Nur Fairuz about the purpose of capturing images from the footage.

She replied that she was instructed to do so by the investigating officer (IO).

Athimulan: What images? Who asked you to capture them?

Nur Fairuz: For this case, I contacted the IO. And during our conversation, he mentioned the vehicles involved, as noted in the traffic report, a Perodua Ativa and a motorcycle.

Athimulan: Why did the captured images need to be zoomed in?

Nur Fairuz: It's part of the enhancement process. After capturing the images, I zoomed them in to clarify the recording quality.

Athimulan: In this case, is the CCTV quality low?

Nur Fairuz: Yes.

Athimulan: The images appear blurry and unclear when zoomed in?

Nur Fairuz: Yes.

The same video was played again.

Athimulan asked if Nur Fairuz had observed that the Perodua Ativa's brake lights were on after it struck victim Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie from behind. She confirmed that she had.

Five videos were presented in court, including dashcam footage from a vehicle, believed to be a four-wheel drive, and CCTV footage from nearby residential areas.

The accused was also represented by counsel Datuk Meor Faridalathrash Wahid and Aiman Hakim Kamaruzzaman.

The prosecution team was led by deputy public prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz, Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani, V. Suloshani and Low Qin Hui.

Two more prosecution witnesses testified today — Corporal Muhammad Zainudin Zainal Abidin, a photographer from the district Criminal Investigation Department, and Corporal Shahiran Mohamad, a photographer from the district Traffic Enforcement Investigation Department.

Shahiran told the court that after taking pictures at the scene, he took four more photos of the deceased at the Forensic Unit of Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.

"The first photo shows external injuries on the deceased's face, the second shows injuries on the right hand, the third shows the body in the mortuary before the autopsy and the fourth shows the body before the post-mortem."

The trial continues tomorrow.
