Lorry driver jailed, caned for pulling daughter to sit on his lap

KUALA LUMPUR: A lorry driver was jailed for three years and six months and given two strokes of the rotan for pulling his daughter's hand and asking her to sit on his lap last month.

Sessions Court judge Tasnim Abu Bakar sentenced the 41-year-old man after he pleaded guilty to offence and ordered him to serve jail time from the date of his arrest on Oct 26.

She ruled that the man must undergo rehabilitation counselling in prison and be put on a two-year police surveillance after his release.

The man was charged with committing the act with sexual intent as someone in the position of trust as the biological father of the teenager.

The incident took place at a house in Sentul at 10.45pm on Oct 1.

The offence under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act, read with Section 16(1), carries a maximum 20 years jail term and whipping.

The accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Pervinah Mohamad Yusof urged the court to impose a fair sentence on the accused.

"The court must consider the trauma suffered by the victim. The accused committed a serious sexual crime, which violated her.

"An appropriate sentence is necessary to deter and combat sexual crimes," she said.
