KUALA LUMPUR: KUALA LUMPUR: Over RM6.53 billion worth of traffic summonses issued since 1990 have yet to be settled.
Federal Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department (JSPT) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said that based on their records between 1990 and yesterday, a total of 135.91 million summonses were registered worth RM20.38 billion.
"Of this number, 67 per cent of the summonses have already been settled involving 92.31 million summonses worth RM8.56 billion.
"The number of summonses that have yet to be settled is 43.59 million worth RM6.53 billion," he told reporters after visiting the Tun HS Lee Traffic Police Station here today.
The City JSPT is currently offering a 50 per cent discount here for payment of traffic summonses from Tuesday until Saturday (Nov 9).
Mohd Yusri said their checks also showed that between Jan and yesterday, they have registered over 4.3 million summonses worth RM646.19 million.
He said most of the offences where summonses were issued were for obstructing traffic and disregarding traffic signs.
"Based on our checks, in Kuala Lumpur alone, 881,211 summonses were issued from Jan until yesterday.
"We find this number to be high considering the number of traffic operations conducted," he said.
Mohd Yusri urged the public to come forward and settle their outstanding summonses.
"We will consider holding more campaigns and offer discounts to motorists in other districts as well," he said.
