KUALA LUMPUR: More than RM1.87 million has been collected by the City Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department within two days since it offered a 50 per cent discount to settle traffic summonses here.
Its director, Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, said on Tuesday and Wednesday, motorists had settled 17,002 summonses.
"We estimate that more than 1,300 people settled 7,677 summonses worth RM841,390 on Tuesday through cash, online payments and 50 per cent discount coupons.
"On Wednesday, the turnout increased further, with an estimated 1,800 people settling their summonses. They paid 9,325 summonses worth more than RM1.03 million," he told reporters today (Nov 7).
Checks at the Tun HS Lee police station this morning saw long queues forming as early as 7am.
Yusri said about 300 people settled their summonses this morning.
"A total of 19 counters were opened with six tents and 350 chairs set up for those waiting to settle their summonses," he said, adding that three extra counters were set up for senior citizens and pregnant women.
He hoped the discount would help the public reduce their financial burden while also educating them on abiding the traffic laws.
It was reported that Kuala Lumpur police were offering a 50 per cent discount for payment of traffic summonses from Nov 5 to 9.
The public could head to the Tun HS Lee police station to check and pay their fines via cashless payment.
The discount does not include summonses issued for accidents, court cases, non-compoundable offences, overtaking dangerously, improper use of emergency lanes and running red lights.
