Myanmar men among four charged in Penang kidnapping incident

BUTTERWORTH: Two Myanmar men were among four people charged at the magistrate's court here today with kidnapping two foreigners last week.

Habizur Rahman Abul Jamil, 27, and Abdullah Abu Jamil, 38, pleaded guilty when the charge was read to them before magistrate's court assistant registrar Mohamad Azrul Muhd Sobri.

The other two people, Hadzri Abd Hamid, 40, and Azri Shahrizal Abd Rahman, 41, both local, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

All four were jointly accused of kidnapping two foreign men with the intent of unlawfully confining them.

They were charged with committing the offence at a construction site of a petrol station in Telok Ayer Tawar at about 8.30pm on Nov 13.

The charge was framed under Section 356 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years' jail and a fine upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Airina Syazreen Zainurin prosecuted while all the accused were not represented.

The court did not offer bail to the two Myanmar men charged in the case. The court, however, set bail at RM5,000 with one surety for the two local men.

The court also set Dec 3 to allow the presence of a Myanmar interpreter before sentencing the two Myanmar men.
