Taken for a ride: E-hailing driver loses RM218,000 to scam

KULAI: An e-hailing driver lost RM218,000 to a non-existent investment scheme that promised returns of 3 to 5 per cent in just three days.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Tan Seng Lee said the victim lodged a report yesterday.

The victim, 49, had used an app for the scheme and made seven transactions totalling RM218,000 to three different accounts between Oct 16 and Nov 13.

"The victim checked the app and saw that his investments had supposedly earned RM500,000," Tan said in a statement.

However, when he tried to withdraw the funds, he found that his account had been blocked.

"Realising something was amiss, he filed a police report," Tan added.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
