KOTA BARU: Police have arrested a car driver and his passenger for causing a fatal accident which killed a couple and their 30-year-old daughter in Setiu, Terengganu, earlier today.
Setiu police chief superintendent Mohd Zain Mat Dris said the 24-year-old driver and the 18-year-old attendant were detained soon after the incident, which took place at KM53 Jalan Kuala Terengganu-Kota Baru.
"The two men, both vegetable sellers from Terengganu, were arrested to assist police investigation.
"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said when contacted.
He said initial investigation revealed that the driver of the four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle lost control of the machine, causing it to veer into the opposite lane and collide head-on with the Perodua Axia.
"The Perodua Axia with four people inside, was heading to Kota Baru from Kuala Terengganu when the crash occurred at about 4.30am," he said.
He said the two men were on their way to deliver the vegetables to suppliers in Kuala Terengganu.
They have earlier bought the vegetables from suppliers in Kota Baru.
It was reported that a couple and their daughter were tragically killed in a crash while returning to Kota Baru after attending their other daughter's convocation in Putrajaya.
The couple was identified as Kamaruddin Ibrahim,55, his 53-year-old wife Maimunah Isa and their second daughter Nur Adriyana, 30, who was driving the car.
