Insulting Prophet Muhammad: Police to send lecturer's case to AGC on Tuesday

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are wrapping up the investigation papers involving a lecturer who had allegedly insulted Prophet Muhammad, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said.

Razarudin added that the investigation papers will be referred to the Attorney-General's Chambers this Tuesday for further action.

As of today, he said, nine police reports have been lodged in connection with the matter.

"We (the police) have recorded statements from five people directly involved in the matter," he said when contacted today.

On Nov 26, the lecturer's statement was recorded by the Classified Crime Investigation Unit (USJT) of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department.

During the session, the police posed 28 questions to the lecturer.

Accompanied by his lawyer, the lecturer was questioned under Section 298A of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

On Nov 21, police opened an investigation following a Facebook post accusing an academician of insulting Prophet Muhammad.

According to the complainant's police report, the post on a Facebook page alleged that a lecturer from a local university had stirred controversy.

The post highlighted a statement made by the lecturer during a programme he conducted, which included derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad and Sayidatina Aisyah.

The remarks were deemed disrespectful, tarnishing the sanctity of the Prophet and his family.

The lecturer's jokes were reportedly met with laughter from the audience, including religious figures who claimed their group exclusively adhered to the Sunnah.
