High under the bridge: Four friends among 5 held, heroin worth RM11,600 seized

KULAI: Five men, including four friends, were arrested in two separate police raids here, leading to the seizure of RM11,600 worth of heroin.

The four men aged between 33 and 49, who tested positive for morphine, were hanging out under a bridge along Jalan Seelong-Ulu Tiram on Dec 13.

District police chief, Assistant Commissioner Tan Seng Lee, said the suspects appeared to be under the influence of drugs and their attempt to flee the scene upon noticing the approaching police officers was futile.

"Investigations revealed that they were under the bridge shooting heroin. Police seized 1,036 grams of heroin in four packets.

"All four were unemployed, had prior drug-related records and are believed sourced the drugs from outside the district," he said in a statement, today.

In the second raid, on Dec 14, police arrested a 43-year-old man at Lorong Bahagia, Bukit Batu here, and seized 21.78 grams of heroin.

Tan said drugs confiscated in both raids could potentially serve 2,000 addicts.

"All five suspects are currently under a seven-day remand until Dec 21 to facilitate investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

The law carries severe penalties, including death sentence or life imprisonment with at least 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.
