KUALA LUMPUR: A police corporal pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court today to charges of gang robbery involving a gold bar worth RM580,345 and other belongings from a Bangladeshi man last month.
Muhammad Arieff Marhalim, 40, entered his no-guilty plea after the charge was read out before judge Izralizam Sanusi.
He was charged with committing gang robbery with an accomplice, who is still at large, on Robin Miah where they fled with a gold bar weighing 1499.81 grammes, RM7,000 and a handphone. It allegedly occurred between 12.25pm and 3.15pm at Jalan Pudu, Kuala Lumpur on Nov 26.
The offence under Section 395 of the Penal Code carries a maximum 20-year jail term with a fine or whipping.
Deputy public prosecutor Nor Aisyah Mohamed Zanyuin asked the court to set bail at RM15,000 in one surety.
In mitigation, defence lawyer Shah Rizal Abdul Manan pleaded for a lower bail. He said his client was still serving the force and supporting three young children and family.
The court set RM10,000 in one surety and fixed Jan 22 for mention.
