'I can't celebrate Raya,' youth says after 6-month jail sentence

BATU PAHAT: A 19-year-old who will spend six months in jail for possession of a stolen motorcycle immediately lamented that he would not be able to celebrate Hari Raya after his sentencing.

"I can't celebrate Raya," Mohamad Aqmal Helizam, was heard saying at the Magistrate's Court.

Earlier, Aqmal pleaded guilty to possessing the stolen motorcycle before magistrate Suhaila Shafi'uddin.

Aqmal had been charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code for dishonestly retaining stolen property for having in his possession a Yamaha LC135 motorcycle in Taman Pantai on Dec 16.

The motorcycle belonged to a 24-year-old man who had reported it missing on Dec 15.

Cops found Aqmal with the motorcycle at a community hall. He admitted to stealing the motorcycle.

The same court previously ordered Aqmal to undergo a good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to possessing a stolen motorcycle belonging to an elderly man.

The offence was committed together with his 22-year-old girlfriend, who is currently serving a six-month prison sentence.

Prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Farah Wahidah Mohd Sharip, while the accused was represented by Kamarulariffin Nordin from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

After hearing the appeal and submissions, the court imposed the prison sentence, effective from the date of arrest on 16 December.
