Police deny claims witness testimony in drug case was altered

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor police have denied a viral claim that the testimony of a witness in a drug case involving a celebrity was altered.

Selangor deputy police chief Datuk S. Sasikala Devi said the police conducted the investigation transparently and following the law.

"On Dec 14, Selangor police confirmed that the Sepang district's Narcotics Crime Investigation Department arrested and investigated a local man, who is also a celebrity.

"On Dec 19, the investigation papers were handed over to the deputy public prosecutor and instructions were received to charge (the celebrity) under Section 6, punishable under Section 39A(2), of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

"On Dec 20 (today), the individual was charged in court," she said.

Sasikala said unverified allegations about the testimony of a witness being altered could lead to public confusion.

As such, she urged the public to refrain from spreading false information.

Earlier today, a local daily had reported that the wife of a celebrity accused of possessing marijuana claimed that she was forced by a policeman to change the witness statement she had made in the report regarding her husband's arrest.

She had said she felt compelled to make the revelation because she believed the actions of the authorities violated ethical standards in an investigation.
