KUANTAN: A Myanmar national who offered a RM200 bribe to a policeman during a roadblock in Cameron Highlands has been sentenced to two months in prison.
Wholesale market worker Muhammed Shafi Muhammed Taher, 28, pleaded guilty after the charge was read to him.
Sessions Court judge Sazlina Safie ordered Shafi's jail sentence to begin today.
Shafi, a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card holder, was charged with offering the bribe to a policeman with the rank of sub-inspector as an inducement not to take action against him for driving without a valid licence.
The father-of-three had committed the offence at a roadblock in front of the Cameron Highlands district police headquarters about 12.30am on Dec 26.
Shafi was driving a Proton Saga with his wife and two children.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission prosecuting officer Suriawani Abdul Rahim urged the court to impose a deterrent punishment.
