Johor religious department detains nine at alcohol and foam party

JOHOR BARU: Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) enforcement officers detained nine individuals during a raid on an alcohol and foam party at a hotel cafe in Perling on New Year's Eve.

Five women were among the nine detained after breathalyser tests confirmed they had consumed alcohol. Four of them were foreigners.

Johor Islamic Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid said 29 individuals were inspected during the raid.

He said the department received a tip-off that the cafe was being used for alcohol and foam parties.

"It is a clear violation of Section 19(1)(2) of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1997.

"The foreigners were held without guarantors and will face court action within 24 hours, while the locals were released on bail," he said in a statement today.

The operation codenamed "Ops Ambang", between 11pm and 3am yesterday, involved 11 JAINJ officers and six personnel from the Johor Baru kadi office.
