Man fined RM5,500 for breaking neighbour's window using slingshot

CHUKAI: A man was fined a total of RM5,500 by the Kemaman magistrate's court yesterday for committing mischief and possessing an imitation weapon, following an incident last month in which his neighbour's house was damaged.

Tan Chee Kiong, 49, pleaded guilty after both charges were read separately before magistrate Amirda Shasha Amir Sharifuddin.

For the first charge, the accused was alleged to have fired a slingshot loaded with ball bearings, causing damage to the complainant's house window, resulting in a loss of about RM3,000.

The offence was committed at Taman Banggol Indah, Kampung Paya Berenjut, Kemaman, on Dec 28 around 4.30pm.

He was charged under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief using a weapon.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of five years' jail or a fine.

Tan was also accused of possessing a rose gold-coloured slingshot and a plastic container holding 79 ball bearings, which were found on a table in his house on Dec 29 around 6.45pm.

He was charged under Section 36 of the Arms Act 1960, which carries a maximum penalty of one-year imprisonment or a fine of RM5,000.

He was fined RM3,000 for the first charge and RM2,500 for the second, both of which he paid.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Zhan Yi prosecuted, while the accused was represented by lawyer Nur Farahin Shazlin Mohd Redhuan Shah Edwin.
