Police raid on ketum seller uncovers 71 weapons, fake machine guns

BAYAN LEPAS: A police raid targeting a ketum drink seller in Lintang Bayan 6 led to the discovery of a stash of 71 dangerous weapons, including a samurai sword, parang, keris, and kerambit.

Authorities also seized two fake automatic machine guns.

Deputy southwest district police chief Superintendent Nermaljit Singh, confirmed the findings, adding that various types of dangerous weapons were stored in a room, including the aforementioned items.

"We are still investigating the ownership of these weapons and whether the suspect is linked to other crimes. So far, the man has admitted that the items were intended for online sale," he said during a visit to the scene today.

The 47-year-old e-hailing driver, who was arrested in connection with the raid, also faces charges related to the discovery of 600 packets of ketum drink.

Police also arrested his 35-year-old second wife, who is believed to have been involved in processing ketum leaves.

The suspect is believed to have rented the house a year ago but only began actively processing and distributing the ketum drink three months ago.

During the 9am raid, police uncovered four barrels filled with packets of ketum drink and additional packets found in the boot of a car.

The ketum drink is believed to have been intended for distribution in the Teluk Bahang and George Town areas.

"Police also seized equipment used for processing ketum drink, including LPG gas tanks, pots, and nine empty barrels.

"The house was also fortified with tall barriers, likely intended to prevent neighbours from observing their activities," Nermaljit said.

He said this was the second time the man had been arrested for the same offence, following a previous arrest in 2023 in Sungai Pinang.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was engaged in this illegal activity to generate income, reportedly earning around RM8,000 a month.
