Driver suffers 40pct burns as tanker lorry bursts into flames in collision

ALOR GAJAH: A tanker lorry driver suffered 40 per cent burns after his vehicle burst into flames in a collision with a trailer lorry at Km199.7 of the North-South Expressway (NSE).

According to Buletin Utama, Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Mohd Sany Sahari said they received an emergency call at 2.48pm, after which eight firefighters were deployed to the scene.

Upon arrival, a tanker lorry carrying palm oil and a BMW Z4 car were found ablaze.

The tanker lorry driver, who sustained burns, was treated by medical personnel before being transported to Melaka Hospital, while the driver of the trailer lorry did not suffer any injury.

Meanwhile, Tan Hong Ta, the driver of the luxury car, who also escaped unharmed, said he had been stranded by the roadside for nearly two hours due to a tyre issue prior to the incident.

As a tow truck arrived at the scene and traffic began to slow down, the tanker lorry was believed to have been unable to stop in time, crashing into the trailer lorry ahead before catching fire.

During the fire, Tan managed to escape and later heard multiple explosions from the tanker lorry.

The incident caused a traffic congestion of more than five kilometres, as the left and middle lanes were completely closed.
