Malacca wakaf land bribery scandal: Businessman remanded

MALACCA: A businessman has been remanded for four days for his alleged involvement in a corruption case in the procurement of wakaf (Islamic endowment) land owned by the Al-Hamideen Mosque in Bukit Cina, here.

The remand order, beginning today, was granted by the Malacca magistrate's court’s assistant registration officer, Mohd Anuar Ostadi.

The 66-year-old businessman appeared at the Malacca Court Complex in Ayer Keroh here, at 10.30am in an orange MACC lock-up shirt.

He was arrested at 12.15pm yesterday while giving his statement to the MACC on the matter at the anti-graft body's state headquarters in Alai here.

He was arrested to facilitate investigations on the procurement of wakaf (Islamic endowment) land owned by the Al-Hamideen Mosque in Bukit Cina, under Section 16 (a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.

On Wednesday, the MACC remanded two individuals – a 61-year-old former chairman of the mosque and his 46-year-old former secretary – over a wakaf land deal.

The duo were arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of selling the endowment land to a non-Muslim, a breach of trust conditions, after receiving a suspected bribe of RM116,000.

The duo were remanded for four days until Saturday to facilitate investigations under Section 16 (a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, and Section 405 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust.
