CAMERON HIGHLANDS: The National Security Council (NSC) will head a group of agencies tasked with monitoring illegal land clearing activities in this area, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.
He said the council will carry out scheduled checks of Cameron Highlands’ forests with the cooperation of the state government.
"As agreed on by the Cameron Highlands Committee today, this measure is one among eight steps that will be implemented to curb land encroachment problems here.
"(Another measure will be the review of the previously-rejected) 600 Temporary Occupation License (TOL) applications (by farmers here)," he said at a press conference after chairing the Cameron Highlands High-level Committee meeting here today.
Zahid said other steps include the issuance of Temporary Working Passes for foreign workers by the Immigration Department; and a gotong-royong programme led by the Drainage and Irrigation Department.
He also announced that 28 Orang Asli families living at Sungai Tiang, Lembah Bertam, will be resettled in a new area to make way for a slope-strengthening project there.
The project, which costs RM2.06 million, involves the construction of a perimeter drainage system on the 14ha land.
Zahid later visited the Orang Asli settlement and the flood mitigation project currently in progress there.
