TN50 roadshow takes on social welfare issues

KAJANG : Social welfare issues were deliberated in a National Transformation 2050 (TN50) dialogue with Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim here.

About 1,000 people turned up for the session held at Industrial Training and Rehabilitation Centre for the Disabled here.

It focussed on eight target groups - women, children, elderly, people with disabilities, homeless, families, underprivileged and natural disasters victims.

"We will pick up suitable suggestions that we have received today and will divide it to relevant department under the ministry," she said after the session.

Rohani said among others suggestions for more accessibility for the disabled will be given attention by the ministry.

"We are trying our best to help the disabled by providing them disabled friendly facilities.

"For those suggesting that the ministry should organise more skill training, we are already into that and we will definitely make improvements," she added.

Among aspirations voiced by the public were on grooming or providing opportunities to disabled people as decision makers.

Society for the Blind Malaysia youth development committee chairman Dr Ahmad Shamsuri Muhamad proposed the government should allocate a quota of five per cent of its workforce for those who are disabled at the decision making level.

He said to do so at least 20 per cent of those in the category will need to have a first class degree to make them eligible as decision makers.

Another suggestion deliberated was for sex education to be introduced in schools as cases of sexual abuse were rampant.

The TN50 roadshow, a brainchild of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, aims to gather views and hopes of the people for the future.
