Govt to expand 'Kasih Kanak-Kanak' programme to address increasing cases of child abuse and neglect

BATU PAHAT: There were 7,532 child neglect and abuse cases reported last year, marking an increase of 762 cases compared to 2022.

Women, Family and Community Development Ministry deputy minister, Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad, said the increasing cases of child abuse and neglect is worrisome.

The Welfare Department statistics revealed that 6,770 minors were abused in 2022, with 7,532 cases reported last year.

"To address the troubling rise in cases requiring child care and protection, the ministry has introduced the 'Kasih Kanak-Kanak' child protection advocacy programme. This initiative is a direct response to the alarming statistics and underscores the ministry's commitment to safeguarding the well-being of children," said Noraini at the Johor-leg launch of 'Kasih Kanak-Kanak' at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato' Onn here today.

The programme has been implemented in 60 schools across the country, positively impacting over 60,000 students.

She said the programme, aimed at educating children to seek immediate help in times of need, will be expanded to eight more states, including Labuan, following its successful rollout last year.

The programme was introduced in Kuala Lumpur and extended to Sabah, Kelantan, Sarawak, Selangor, Melaka, and Negri Sembilan.

"Through the 'Kasih Kanak-Kanak' programme, we hope to raise awareness and educate the community on the importance of safeguarding children.

"Children are also taught that it's an offence to abuse or neglect them and that stern actions will be taken against the perpetrators," she said, adding that the programme is crucial in equipping minors with the knowledge to protect themselves and seek help when necessary.

Noraini said that through strategic partnerships with the Education Ministry, the police, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the initiative seeks to enhance public awareness and response to child protection issues.

Also present during the Johor-leg programme launch were State Women, Family, and Community Development committee chairman Khairin-Nisa Ismail@Md On, State Education and Information committee chairman Aznan Tamin and Social Welfare Department deputy director-general (Operations) Wan Noraidah Wan Mohd Zain.

The 'Talian Kasih' helpline can be utilised at 15999 or WhatsApp 019-2615999 for immediate assistance in cases of abuse.
