Man missing, feared drown while crossing Pegalan River

KENINGAU: A man has been reported missing and feared drown while his teenage son was saved by a relative while they were crossing the Pegalan River in Keningau early this morning.

Daibet Juan, 48, is believed to have drowned while crossing the river with his 11-year-old son and his 16-year-old nephew at 11.20am.

According to Keningau Fire and Rescue Services Department chief Seminin Itang, the three were swept away by the strong currents as they were crossing the river.

“The nephew managed to grab hold of his cousin and both swam to shore but Daibet was swept away.

“A search and rescue operation was launched for the missing man but had to be called off at 6pm as it was getting dark,” said Seminin, adding that the search and rescue operation will resume the next day.
