The Star editors summoned to Home Ministry

PUTRAJAYA: Four representatives from The Star arrived at the Home Ministry here this morning to provide explanation over the newspaper's controversial frontpage on Saturday.

Its executive editors Rozaid Abdul Rahman, Brian Martin and Dorairaj Nadason, and specialist editor M. Shanmugam arrived at the ministry at 10.50am.

Yesterday, the ministry's secretary-general Datuk Seri Alwi Ibrahim said it would summon the editors of the newspaper to explain the frontpage which portrayed a picture of Muslims performing terawih prayer sandwiched between the headline ‘Malaysian Terrorist Leader’ and a spa advertisement.

Alwi said the badly-placed headline painted a poor image for Muslims, as though those performing the prayer were terrorists.

Yesterday, The Star issued an apology following wide criticism over its front page.

The issue had triggered criticisms from Netizens, social organisations and even political parties that described the cover as a “misleading visual representation” apart from being insensitive to Muslims.

Calls were also made for action to be taken against the publication by the relevant authorities.
