Death of bullied navy cadet: Hishammuddin pledges 'no compromise'

KUALA LUMPUR: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has instructed the Armed Forces and the Malaysian National Defence University (UPNM) to launch a probe into the death of a navy cadet, who allegedly died after being bullied.

Navy cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnian, 21, died at the Serdang Hospital at 9pm yesterday.

Reports had indicated that the third-year student was brought to the hospital with severe injuries.

There were also burns on his body, believed to be from having a steam iron pressed onto his chest, hands and feet.

Hishammuddin, in a statement today, said no one would be spared from legal action if found guilty.

Expressing his sympathy to Zulfarhan’s family, Hishammuddin said he was saddened by the news.

He said Zulfarhan’s death reminded him of another bullying case which took place back in 2004.

“That occurred back when I was the Education Minister. The incident left a huge impact on me and I still remember it vividly.

“Zulfarhan’s case may be different from the one in 2004. But whatever the reason, in no way is it acceptable to beat someone to death,” he said.

The Armed Forces, in a statement, had confirmed Zulfarhan’s death and said an internal investigation has been launched.

“We will not compromise on those involved. Stern action will be taken against them,” read the statement.

Police have since arrested 36 people, including 32 UPNM students and four local university undergraduates, aged between 20 and 21, in connection with the case.

All 36 people are being remanded for seven days until June 8.

Police have classified the case as murder
