M'sian medical student killed after being hit by bus in Edinburgh, Foreign Ministry to assist family

KUALA LUMPUR: The Foreign Ministry has assured its assistance to the family of medical student Soh Zhi Min who was killed in an accident in Edinburgh, Scotland on Wednesday.

Deputy Foreign minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said the ministry and the High Commission of Malaysia in London are rendering the necessary assistance and support.

It was reported that Soh, 23, was hit by a tour bus on Princes Street after falling from her bicycle on May 31. Local police revealed the wheels of her bicycle were stuck in the tram tracks.

“(Soh) Zhi Min was a JPA (Public Service department) scholar who was pursuing her 4th year in medicine at the University of Edinburgh.

“Following confirmation of her identity on June 1, officials from the High Commission met with representatives from the university and local police regarding this incident,” Reezal said in a statement posted on the Malaysian International Students Bureau Facebook page.

“My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends for their loss. I have also personally contacted her mother to express my deepest condolences, and to assure her family that we will assist to the best extent possible during this difficult time,” he said.

BBC reported that the university described Soh as "talented and thoughtful" and that it had lost "a bright star of the future".

It said that in a statement issued through Police Scotland, Dr David Kluth from Edinburgh University's medical school, said: "Zhi Min was a talented, thoughtful student, who was well-respected by her peers and always keen to help.

"She will be deeply missed by the medical school community.

"Our sympathies at this time are with her family and friends. We have all lost a bright star of the future."
