Christian leader questions 'insensitive' Jerusalem Jubilee celebration in Melaka

MELAKA: A controversial assembly labeled as a ‘Zionist ceremony’ by Muslim NGOs has been equally criticised by a Christian leader.

Christ Church bishop Jason Selvaraj viewed the organisers of the Nations of the All Malaysian-Golden Gate Nation Revival Convocation (AMGGNRC) Golden Gate aligning with Jerusalem's Jubilee congregation, planned for June 15-18, as insensitive and unjustified.

“It is very insensitive of the organisers to use Jewish symbols," said Selvaraj.

“I believe Perkasa (Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia) raised a legitimate and valid question. They cannot be so insensitive in a multi-racial country. I doubt the Christian Federation of Malaysia and Council of Churches in Malaysia are open to this.”

Perkasa Islamic affairs bureau chairman Dr Amini Amir Abdullah had claimed that such ceremonies insulted Islam as it celebrated the Jewish victory of Muslims in Israel's conquest of Palestine 50 years ago.

“Christians all over the world celebrate the Jerusalem Jubilee under an international organisation called the International Christian Embassy of Jerusalem. We are perplexed as to why Melaka was chosen as host," said Dr Amini in his statement.

"This is an historic celebration for Israel, but why then are the Evangelist Christians in Malaysia holding a big celebration?"

Selvaraj echoed Dr Amini's sentiments in calling for the organisers to look into the repercussions.

“Using Jewish symbols only can raise more questions and issues,” said Selvaraj.

“Christians in Malaysia are tolerant, sensitive and understanding, and we will not disturb the harmony of the country.”

As of 3pm today, the organisers had taken down the poster promoting the event on their Facebook page, while a visit to the Calvary Life Assembly Chinese (CLAC) church in Taman Teknologi Cheng, found it to be closed, with a sign stating that Monday is a day off.

The New Straits Times is still trying to get in touch with the organisers.

At the state legislative assembly seating, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron said the state government had never received any requests for approval to organise such an event. He rejected ideas of the state being turned into a venue for such celebrations.
