Sarawak politician suffers burns in acid attack

SIBU: A Sarawak United Peoples' Party (SUPP) leader was injured when he was splashed with acid near his office in Lorong Tuanku Osman 4 here today.

In the 12.15pm incident, SUPP Dudong branch deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong, 58, was about to enter his car when he was confronted by man who suddenly splashed the liquid on his face.

The man later sped off with an accomplice on a waiting motorcycle.

Wong, an accountant by profession, immediately ran into the toilet of a nearby restaurant to wash off the liquid from his face before he was rushed to a private hospital here.

It was learnt that Wong, accompanied by his family, were then flown via helicopter to the Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching for treatment.

It was also learnt that medical expert from Kuala Lumpur has arrived at the hospital to attend to Wong's case.

Sibu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Saiful Bahri Abdullah said Wong sustained second degree burns on his face and right side of his body during the incident.

"We are in the midst of identifying and locating the suspect." he said.
