Khairy joins 500 in Sea Games torch run across Samarahan

SIMUNJAN: Some 500 runners including members of the armed forces and people with disabilities (OKU) joined in the Samarahan-level torch run today in anticipation of the upcoming 29th Sea Games and the 9th Asean Para Games.

Sarawak is the fifth destination for the torch run, which started in Johor on May 14.

During the first stage of the run today, Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin lead 350 members from the 3rd Battalion of the Malay regiment to cross the 1.48km Batang Sadong bridge, which is the longest bridge in the state.

Khairy later joined a convoy comprising 29 high-power motorcycles.

The run then proceeded with Khairy joining people with disabilities and the locals as the run continued towards Padang Sentral, before the torch was handed over the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

Khairy when met after completing the Samarahan relay was pleased with the turnout and support.

“We want people from all over the country to feel the excitement over the upcoming Sea Games and Asean Para Games,” said Khairy.

The torch run will continue in Petra Jaya tomorrow.
