Malaysia wants Gulf nations to take part in mediation effort, find solution to crisis

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia urges all parties to take part in Kuwait's mediation efforts and comply with the agreements reached by Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations, specifically the 2014 Riyadh Agreement.

In a statement today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said Malaysia believed the agreement is an acceptable basis for a solution to the crisis.

Malaysia acknowledges the important role of the Saudi Arabian government as the beacon of stability in the Gulf, he added.

"Also its role in upholding the unity of the Ummah. For this reason, all parties must ensure the security and stability of Saudi Arabia as the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, is protected and preserved at all costs," he added.

Najib said Malaysia recognises the government's concerns in the current crisis and encourages all peace loving nations to back efforts to end the crisis.

Last month, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Bahrain announced the suspension of political, economic and diplomatic ties with Qatar.

The countries criticised Qatar of supporting extremist groups in which Qatar denied the accusation.

The severing of relations included withdrawing ambassadors, and imposing trade and travel bans.

Najib said Malaysia was proud to participate in the 2017 Riyadh Summit at which the country has reiterated its relentless support in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, just as the country was proud and honoured to host King Salman Abdulaziz Al-Saud in Kuala Lumpur early this year.

"We have always upheld the principle of non-interference to the internal affairs of other sovereign countries and urge all nations to do the same.

"Our government strongly supports the efforts by Emir of Kuwait to mediate the escalating tensions and we stand ready to assist if our contribution is needed," he said.

He added that Malaysia is closely monitoring the situation in the Arab world especially Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt and Qatar.

"We pray that with the grace of Allah, the Almighty, all differences among our Arab brothers will be settled amicably and the unity and harmony of the GCC countries can be restored," he added.
