KOTA KINABALU: There are more than 25 sites in Sabah that can be developed as geo-tourism spots according to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) geologist Professor Dr Felix Tongkul.
“Geo-tourism, which diversifies existing tourism products related to flora, fauna and cultures in Sabah, is emerging rapidly especially in Australia, China, United States.
“The new tourism product can be developed provided local community are empowered to protect the sites, availability of experts to guide (tour) and marketing,” he said during the inaugural Brunei-Indonesia- Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Higher Education Summit here.
Felix added among identified sites were Mount Kinabalu, Maliau Basin, Kudat, Pulau Tiga, Batu Tulug, and Pulau Sipadan, among others.
“Other sites which are located outside protected areas are also in need of urgent protection,” he said.
